“RE:birth” by TC.KYLIE x The Hourglass is a daring debut EP that fuses Japanese jazz fusion, post-rock intensity, and cinematic storytelling, reflecting Kylie’s journey between Hong Kong and the UK. Inspired by Shaun Martin, Robert Glasper, and Japanese acid jazz pioneers like Fox Capture Plan and Jabberloop, the album carries both technical brilliance and emotional resonance.
The lead single “Rebirth 重生”, influenced by Life of Pi and Chick Corea’s Spain, captures life’s uncertainties through odd time signatures and hypnotic phrasing, before exploding into a post-rock climax inspired by toe—mirroring resilience and unity among the Hong Kong diaspora. “Merry-Go-Round of Life 人生のメリーゴーランド” reimagines Joe Hisaishi’s classic with a jazz big band, weaving nostalgic piano memories, Victor Wu’s lyrical flute, and Kylie’s electrifying keytar solo infused with retro-gaming energy from Sonic the Hedgehog (1991).
Beyond the singles, “Stage 命定舞台” pays homage to Cantonpop roots with echoes of Eason Chan, evolving into a cathartic post-rock section. “Sea 海の彼岸” channels the thrill of Mario Kart with brass-driven rhythms and Casiopea-inspired synths, while “Nightingale 小夜啼鳥”, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, delivers a poignant reinterpretation of The Nightingale and the Emperor.
The album artwork by Don Mak, inspired by The Beatles, symbolises Hongkongers boldly stepping from neon-lit streets to new chapters abroad.
